Tips for Designing a Successful Book Cover

When readers have countless books for their choosing, a striking cover can make the biggest difference. So this now poses the question: what makes a book cover successful?

If you’re in the process of self-publishing your book, here are tips to help you create the right cover design:

Give the cover a primary focus – this is the most crucial. Your book talks about something, and the cover must make that one single idea crystal. Don’t overcrowd your cover with too many items.

Imagine your book cover were a billboard, trying to capture the attention of every speeding prospect. Billboards often have 6 words at most. You must “get it” at 60 mph, in no more than 5 seconds. Your book cover should do the same. At a glance, your prospect should know your book’s genre, focus, and tone.

Anything you include in your design should help you communicate with the reader. Each element should count.

Don’t consider a white background because it will surely disappear on retailers’ white screens. Something with texture or perhaps an illustration, should be safe. The last thing you want is to lose sales because a very trivial issue that you could have well avoided, if only you paid attention.

Reduce your cover design to about the size of an Amazon thumbnail and see if it’s still readable. You want to make it readable.

Talking about readability, pick a simple font that will be easy to read despite a radical reduction. Also, watch out for lacy script typefaces – they usually disappear when small.

Choose an image that clarifies instead of being too literal. For instance, it may convey the mood or the historical period of the events.

This may be tricky as your choice of colors will clearly depend on the general theme or tone of your book. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t use too many so you don’t distract readers from your cover’s main message. Also explore some color palettes online to see what combinations can work well for your book.

The idea is not to copy what they’ve done, but just to observe their techniques and mimic them with your own cover. You won’t believe how this can help you create your own ideas and concepts.

Book Cover Design Software

If you’re going to self-publish your book and self-design your cover, using software created for this purpose can make things more efficiently. You won’t have to worry about the technicalities because the software will take care of that for you.
